Wedge Prepress: Graphic Design and Production.

Document types.

Welcome to Wedge Prepress.

Just a couple of decades ago, graphic layout work (art for the printed production of business cards, brochures, newspaper advertising and the like) could only be accomplished by a specialized few graphics studios, composition houses and print shops. But today professional graphic artists and amateurs alike commonly use digital processes to create these kinds of documents, generating the files that will ultimately be output by a job printer or copy center.

The Pitch.
Developing a polished-looking logo design and business card for your startup business, probably adding a tasteful letterhead and envelope, and maybe a well-balanced ad for the local paper or an informative custom brochure, are practically necessities ... but doing it yourself can have some drawbacks, as many have discovered. You may not be able to make it look just the way you want it to, no matter how hard you try; there may be compatibility issues, with the newspaper or print shop being unable to use your files; or, time may just be too short to take on another project.

Wedge Prepress can help.
My name is Chip Wedge, and I operate a graphic design, layout and production studio in Upstate New York. We don't design Web pages, or run a printing press; our business is the inexpensive production and editing of the materials that you TAKE to the printer - the layout for your letterhead or newsletter, for example, or the finished ad to be delivered to the newspaper.  Prepress.  I personally bring over twenty-five years' professional experience to this mix (having been familiar with rubber cement and T-squares), and a couple of very important distinctions.

Quality.
In all modesty, we do nice work. If you've been disappointed with the quality of your ad as it was laid out by the newspaper, or if your business card looks amateurish, it might be worth your while to contact us. I believe that the essence of design is more art than science ... and while the emergence of the computer as a design tool has been a wonderful development, the computer itself doesn't provide the expertise, or create the layout, any more than a hammer and saw can build a house. That's where we can help. (If you like, we can edit your text for grammar and style, too.) And if you send me a graphic file - JPG, TIFF, EPS, PDF, etc. - that's "close" to the final version you want, we can probably work from there (with your additional graphic files or original images) and provide you with a superior result.

Click for samples of a few  logos we've created and one page of a 6-page, 4-color technical brochure. Use "back" button to return.

Price.
We normally charge on an hourly basis, with the rate somewhat dependent upon whether we're creating something from your "raw materials" (design and production), or bringing your already-formed ideas and rough layout to life (strictly production). We can talk about your budget, and decide whether a project is realistic and affordable - for both of us - before there's any obligation. And, if it turns out that you were looking for something a little different from the first result we show you, we'll be happy to work with you to better match your vision of the final product.

Receive files by email or FTP, or hard copies by postal mail.
One of the great benefits that the computer age has provided is the ease with which graphic files may be transported around the world. Via the Internet, PDF files (generally the compatibility standard today) can quickly be sent directly to your computer ... or to the copy center, print shop, or publisher of your choice.
